Kōtuku, White Heron for 'Bird Of The Year'

White Heron Sanctuary Tours proudly campaigns for the revered Kōtuku or White Heron in Forest & Bird’s annual 'Bird of the Year' competition.

With a stable yet fragile population of around just 200 - and only one breeding ground in Aotearoa, the Kōtuku is one of New Zealand’s rarest native birds.

Once hunted to the brink of extinction for its prized plumage feathers, the Kōtuku’s survival is a powerful conservation success story and a symbol of hope for all endangered wildlife.

Together, we can help raise awareness for this extraordinary species.
