Vote Kōtuku for Bird Of The Year!

White Heron Sanctuary Tours is honoured to act as the official campaign manager for the revered Kōtuku or White Heron in Forest & Bird’s annual Bird of the Year competition.

With a stable yet fragile population of around just 200 - and only one breeding ground in Aotearoa - the Kōtuku is among  New Zealand’s rarest native birds.

​

​Once hunted to the brink of extinction for its prized plumage feathers, the Kōtuku’s survival is a powerful conservation success story and a symbol of hope for all endangered wildlife.
